We set off early this morning as we were going into Kendal to visit the Museum of Lakeland Life and we wanted to get a parking place. The Museum didn’t open until 10.30am so we went along the Riverside Walk looking back to the bridge …
and passing the huge church …
Finally we came to the Museum building but this is the view from the rear …
and this is where we went in …
It was a fascinating insight into Lakeland life and it also had a room dedicated to Arthur Ransome of whom we are great fans. Unfortunately no photographs were allowed inside but I got this as proof of the Ransome connection …
We then collected Hamish from the RV and took him for a stroll up the main street to look at the town before moving on to our next destination. We’d picked out Sizergh Castle, a National Trust property, as somewhere we’d quite like to see and so made our way to it. Once parked and the kettle on for coffee Mike went to see about going in as we’ve got National Trust membership cards. It wasn’t free for members and was going to cost £7.50 each! I wasn’t that keen to look around! So after coffee we moved on and made our way towards Grange-over-Sands. It was a nice drive but not a lot to see and nowhere to park with a view! Followers of my blog will know that we like to park with water of some sort in sight. So we motored on and out of town passing through Flookburgh and Cark, finally stopping on a little side road by the River Leven for lunch …
It turned out to be a private road but we had to drive on up it to turn round! After we’d eaten we then headed back towards Windermere and took the road alongside the lake. Here we found a National Trust place which was free for us - Fell Foot Park and Gardens. It was delightful. We walked down the path to the lake where the view was lovely …
and Hamish posed as always …
We could hear the steam train on the other side of the lake and then there was the smoke from it …
At the end of the walk is a little café so we sat and had an ice-cream …
Just a lovely setting …
It was then back to the RV and off once again, stopping briefly at a viewpoint where you can just about see the Lakeside steamer on one of its trips …
and we got chatting with a lovely chap from Northumberland who was wild camping in his ‘Tupperware Tardis’ …
The road then took us through Bowness-on-Windermere …
and back to our campsite …
