Barrow to Coniston

There is no signal for either of our mobiles on the campsite so after leaving this morning we stopped by the road and rang to book the Swallows and Amazons boat trip for next Wednesday which will be our last day in the Lakes. No problem, we’re all booked including Hamish which is nice as we won’t have to leave him in the RV.

We then took the road to Barrow-in-Furness which is the most southerly point that we’re visiting in the Lakes. We’d driven the first part of the road yesterday but after the turn-off to Grange we were on new territory. We could see the Barrow Monument up on the hill but it looked as if it was shrouded in plastic …

Our first destination was Tesco so we could stock up with some food and also top the RV up with fuel. It was a huge store and so a few extras found their way into the trolley! After leaving Tesco we made our way over the Jubilee Bridge onto Walney Island …

where we drove to the far side of the island and parked for lunch …

Hamish went for a walk …

and we could see a wind farm offshore …

Looking back we could see some large buildings and wondered what they were. We asked a local who told us they were where nuclear submarines are built! After lunch we drove out past them …

and then there was the Docks Museum …

before taking the road away from Barrow and driving alongside Duddon sands …

We were making for Lake Coniston and found a lovely spot to stop for a cuppa and a cream cake …

It turned out to be almost opposite to Peel Island (Wild Cat Island in Ransome books) …

and after tea we wandered along the road to look at the lake and take some photos …

It was then time to head back to site passing the The Old Man of Coniston …

and some lovely scenery …
