Dog-Sitting Day

Mark, Stuart and their dog Sharpie have been joined at their camp-site by their neighbours John and Leigh, two children Declan and Ewan and their two dogs. I offered to have all the dogs here so that they could go to Portreath beach for a surf.  I was envisaging four small dogs all playing happily together and then they arrived!!  When the car pulled up it had a miniature pony in it!  Grayson is a Leonberger – the Gentle Giant which is about 3ft in height at the withers!!!!  Their other dog was Rossie a 14 month old rescue springer spaniel who fell in love with Hamish and followed him everywhere that he went.

After the initial investigation of their temporary home they all settled down very well.  Grayson and Sharpie the bulldog spent the morning outside in the shade …

In the afternoon I handed over the dog-sitting duties to Mike’s sister Lesley as she’d arrived to keep him company while I spent some time on the beach with the others.  The surf was great and I had a lovely time with them.  Poor John who already had a dodgy back when he arrived, stood on a weever fish and had to visit the Surf Club to get his foot treated.  He had to sit for 15 minutes with it in a bowl of hot water – as hot as he could take it.  Meantime Leigh who was enjoying the sunshine which was topping up her tan, had a seagull do the unmentionable all across her stomach!!  However they all had a fantastic time and have vowed to return to Cornwall another year.

Boat Trip and Beach

Paul’s sister Karen and her husband are down in Cornwall for a few days and I was invited along for the boat trip up the Fal.  We drove into Falmouth and parked at the Quarry, made our way down to Prince of Wales Pier, bought pasties for lunch and sat on the pier eating them.  The weather was fantastic and it was soon time to board the Western Endeavour.

The tide was really low and on previous trips there had always been more water.  It was interesting to see the river with mud on either side of us.

We got right up to Malpas where we turned around with only about two feet of water beneath us!

When we were almost back to our mooring we saw a massive yacht which is owned by Roger Taylor the drummer with Queen …

Someone was waving to us from a window – maybe it was Roger!!!

Later on they all came down to Portreath beach where Jo and Karen braved the water …

Story-time at the Minack Theatre, Beach and a BBQ

The family were up and out early this morning as they were off to the Minack Theatre for a children’s story-time morning.  They’d booked their seats yesterday as it’s very popular and were glad they’d arrived early as in the end it was a full-house.

Soon after they arrived there was great excitement as some basking sharks were spotted …

In the afternoon Jo, Paul, Mark and Stuart came down to join us on the beach.  Paul and Mark didn’t surf with us so they were useful for taking photos!

Fish & Chips in Porthleven

The day began by collecting Pam and taking her to Barncoose Hospital for an appointment at 11 o’clock.  Most people take one or maybe two people with them but Pam had an entourage of eight!!  After she’d seen the specialist we piled back into the two cars and set off for Portleven.

A couple of years ago we’d taken Pam for a fish and chip lunch and when we suggested it for this year she was over the moon.  We parked on the harbour and with Pam on her scooter we walked round to the grass area to find a bench.  Mike, Simon and I then took orders and went to The Top Chippy, the same fish and chip shop that we’d used two years ago.  When we mentioned it to the owners they said it was exactly two years since they’d opened and we said we remembered the good luck cards and flowers that they had for their new venture.  We delivered the food and sat and enjoyed it …

After lunch we went for a stroll around the harbour looking at Henry parked on the other side …
