Second Day–Restormel Castle & Lostwithiel

Photos from our early walk this morning …

About four years ago Jo, Mike and I went to Restormel Castle but Paul had not come with us as he went to a Hill Climb.  It’s an English Heritage site which meant I got in for free as I’m a member!  We had a walk around the outside first …

Then we went inside …

We’d taken a picnic lunch and so with rugs on the grass, we settled down to eat and read our books.  It was so hot in the sunshine but there was a cool breeze which was heavenly under the trees.  Looking back at the castle …

In the afternoon we drove into Lostwithiel and had a wander around the town and church …

Boat Trip and Beach

Paul’s sister Karen and her husband are down in Cornwall for a few days and I was invited along for the boat trip up the Fal.  We drove into Falmouth and parked at the Quarry, made our way down to Prince of Wales Pier, bought pasties for lunch and sat on the pier eating them.  The weather was fantastic and it was soon time to board the Western Endeavour.

The tide was really low and on previous trips there had always been more water.  It was interesting to see the river with mud on either side of us.

We got right up to Malpas where we turned around with only about two feet of water beneath us!

When we were almost back to our mooring we saw a massive yacht which is owned by Roger Taylor the drummer with Queen …

Someone was waving to us from a window – maybe it was Roger!!!

Later on they all came down to Portreath beach where Jo and Karen braved the water …

Woodland Walk at Trelissick

It’s Simon’s last day and the plan had been to go to Dartmoor and watch the Tour of Britain.  However Bradley Wiggins has pulled out with a stomach bug and Mark Cavendish has spent the last two days at the back of the pelaton so the decision was taken to stay in Cornwall, watch it on the television and to take Hamish for a walk at Trelissick.  This is somewhere that Simon has never visited before and with good weather forecast and picnic food already bought, it seemed a good idea.  We set off just before lunch, parked on the grass and had our picnic …

Jo and Paul arrived soon after with Fred and we set off across the field heading for the Woodland Walk …

We had to pass a herd of cows which is something my mother would never have done bless her.  She was absolutely petrified of them!

Once in the wood we had a leisurely stroll with glimpses of the river …

When we reached the road we walked down to take a look at the King Harry Ferry.  We were told there was a hidden jetty and it gave us a perfect view of the ferry.  There was a wedding party in two VW campers aboard and there was plenty of tooting of horns!

After watching the ferry cross again we walked back up the hill to Trelissick and after entering by the water tower we found a table outside the cafe and enjoyed a very welcome coffee …
