The Orchid Non-Event and Cockington

When we got back to the site last night Jo and I had a mooch in the Information Room and picked out Orchid Paradise as somewhere which looked interesting to visit. Another thing in its favour was that it was very close to Trago Mills and this was naturally on our to-do list! So this morning we piled into their car, set off for Newton Abbot and parked in the car park for the nursery. We thought we'd look in the shop part before paying to go into 'Paradise' and after looking at some beautiful plants and loads of cuttings we said 'Seen enough?'

We escaped from the shop and then noticed a sign which was advertising an 'Orchid Event' at the weekend. We became very silly trying to work out what on earth would be happening at an 'Orchid Event'! Very glad that we'd saved our money we decided to go and spend it at Trago. Jo had a voucher to use and wanted some new walking boots which hopefully wouldn't hurt her toes. One minute we were all together and the next we'd lost Mike! I tried phoning his mobile but it went straight to voicemail. After retracing our steps and searching in all the likely places we gave up and headed back towards the car hoping that he'd appear from somewhere. He was waiting for us by the other exit and after buying and eating pasties for lunch we made our way to Cockington village. This is another place we've never been to before and it was lovely. We were taken past this house ...

to the duckpond ...

then across the cricket ground with its pavillion ...

and as we began to look at the workshops it started to rain ...

A good excuse for coffee and cake!

The rain stopped and looking outside we saw the horse and carriage waiting so nipped out to take a photo ...

Then it was time to walk back to the car passing this old cottage ...

spying another horse and carriage ...

which turned around and trotted up the hill past me ...

Leaving the Forge behind ...

we returned to the car and drove back to the campsite. Another brilliant day!

Loved Cockington when my sister, her two children and myself stayed in Torquay way back in the very early 1980s.
