Canonteign Falls and Castle Drogo

It is our first morning at Barley Meadow Camping and Caravanning site near Crockernwell on the edge of Dartmoor. I looked out as I made our morning cuppa and Jo and Paul's caravan had the sun just rising behind it ...

Today we were going to Canonteign Falls which is somewhere new for all of us. Once we'd arrived we went to the shop and handed over our 10% off vouchers which we'd printed off their website - I always like a discount! The dogs were allowed in and checking on the map and seeing this sign, it looked as if it would be quite a walk ...

We saw the Clampitt Falls ...

reached a bridge ...

and could already see the waterfall above us ...

We then arrived at the 90 Victorian steps ...

and began to climb them ...

At the top was the Old Fern Garden ...

and we looked down Devil's Leap ...

More climbing ...

past a log made into a snake ...

Then we'd arrived at the top ...

What a view ...

and what a drop ...

Stopping on the way down to admire the view ...

It was much easier on the descent but there were some lovely tree roots which you had to be careful didn't trip you up ...

and strange sculptures in the trees ...

Back down to the lake and in the distance you can see the waterfall ...

We were now gasping for a coffee and also feeling a bit peckish so stayed for lunch as there were tables outside. A black swan had tried to get some food from neighbouring diners and then waddled off to find his mates ...

We'd had a lovely time here and if you're in the area it is well worth a visit.

We then moved on to Castle Drogo which Jo and Paul had been to on their last holiday but I'd never seen it and Jo wanted to show me. The chaps stayed outside with the dogs (getting colder by the minute!) and we went on the tour. We'd approached it down a long drive and on first impressions I thought it looked more like a prison than a family home!

Once inside a lady greeted us and gave us a book which explained the lay-out of the house. The first room was the library and as we were looking around we could hear the lady saying exactly the same words as she greeted more people. I don't know why but it just sounded really funny that she never varied her words and I'm afraid we became very schoolgirlish and got the giggles! When we moved on to the dining room there was a lady steward on duty and we got some very black looks as we were still giggling. Jo said it was much more fun going round with me than it was last time when she was on her own! Here is a selection of photos ...

More fun on our part!

And some more photos ...

By the time we came out the chaps were freezing and very glad to see us. It was now time to get back to the campsite and plan what was happening tomorrow.
