Crystal Side Repeaters

The last time that Phill and Jamie were in Cornwall Phill noticed that the side repeater was broken on the driver’s side of Henry. Well I finally got around to ordering new ones online from My Beautiful Mini, choosing crystal ones instead of the original orange ones and this morning we went up to Jo and Paul’s where Paul did a brilliant job in replacing them for us. He also sorted out the rear washer which was just dribbling water and re-aligned the passenger side windscreen wiper. Many thanks Paul x

New Houses

I last blogged back in May 2011 about the new houses that were being built at the end of Greenfield Terrace / Rose Villa Farm. This was how they looked last July …

and this was the progress by October …

We noticed that the fencing is now down and the road is open so wandered up to take a peek. I was pleasantly surprised as it’s looking quite good!

Bottling Chateau Portreath

We’ve had a 5 gallon container of red wine waiting to be bottled for a little while now but with Mike’s poorly eyes it’s a job which has been delayed until he felt able to do it properly. This morning he suggested that we get it done, apart from anything else we wanted to try it! I helped him with the specific gravity testing as the marks on the hydrometer are very tiny and then after sweetening it up very slightly, it was over to him to bottle and cork.

At six o’clock the first bottle was opened and it tasted as good as ever!

Chateau Portreath is the best! Cheers!

Ribbons and Bows!

We were back again at Trelissick with Jo and Paul because the water tower was open for the public. As we approached it we couldn’t miss the bright pink ribbon and bow!

They had to limit the number of visitors as it is so tiny inside but we were soon allowed to enter and we began in the bathroom which is just inside the main entrance …

Up the spiral staircase and we arrived at the bedroom …

On up again to the sitting room …

Unfortunately we were unable to visit the kitchen and so that was the end of our look around. It’s a cute little place but I don’t think I’ll be rushing to stay there!

Back to the National Trust shop and more Christmas decorations …

Carriage Driving and Christmas Decorations

One Thursday a National Trust leaflet dropped out of The West Briton, our local weekly paper and I spotted that there were to be carriage rides for just £3 around the Trelissick Estate. This immediately took my fancy and I thought Jo would be interested as well. This morning was the first day of the rides with booking taken from eleven o’clock and rides due to start at midday. We arrived and booked our seats on the 12.10pm drive …

It was a hive of activity getting the horses ready …

We had a bit of time to spare and so went for a wader around the gardens. I’ve been to Trelissick so often to walk Hamish but had never been inside the gardens before. They were all geared up for children visiting with boxes showing the Twelve Days of Christmas although we only saw three of them on our travels …

Considering it was winter and many trees were bare, it was still a lovely walk and I’m determined to come back when flowers are in bloom.

Then it was time to get back for our drive. While we waited we had a look around the stables and tack rooms which were all decorated …

Santa’s little helper was ready for us and off we went …

It was only a short drive but thoroughly enjoyable. After a visit to the NT shop where I found a birthday present for Lesley, Mike’s sister, we left Trelissick and moved on to Carnon Downs Garden Centre.

Jo wanted to find a birthday present for a friend and I was keen to see all the Christmas decorations. It didn’t disappoint!

Lunch at Juliot’s Well

Now we’re no longer MX-5 owners we won’t be renewing our membership of the Owners Club on 1st January. Today there was a run which was stopping for lunch at a not too distant place and we thought it would be nice to surprise everyone and turn up to join them. Juliot’s Well Holiday Park near Camelford had been used by the Club as a venue for a Christmas Party which we hadn’t attended so it somewhere new for us. We arrived before the 5’s and parked facing the entrance. As they drove in I waved and slowly people began to realise who the mad person in the Mini was who was waving frantically! It was lovely with hugs all round and people saying how nice it was to see us there. We joined them for a fantastic roast which was the bargain price of £5.95! There were several new members who we didn’t know but also loads of our old friends and we had a good natter and catch up.

Spectacular Waves

Both yesterday and today we’ve had large waves and spectacular sights at the harbour. The surfers have had a great few days and Hamish has had extra walks as I wanted to take some photos of the waves breaking on the breakwater …

I think he was hoping we’d be on the move soon but he was very good and sat patiently waiting!

Westie Walk

The Honeymooners Visit Cornwall

The boys hired a motorhome for their honeymoon and after a couple of days staying at the Chichester Camping and Caravanning Club Site so they could ‘do’ Portsmouth, they made their way to the Tavistock Club Site where they stayed for the rest of the week. They came down to Portreath today mainly to see Pam and bring her some ‘goodies’ from the day and to show her their photographs. She had no idea they were visiting and it was a lovely surprise for her.

After the four of us had lunch at the Arms they took us for a drive to Perranporth in the motorhome. We parked on the hill overlooking the beach …

and then walked down to the town and beach…

The plan was to have a cream tea back at the van but we were all so full after our lunch that we just had a biscuit with a cuppa while we watched the surfers. The cream tea was saved for later …

On the dashboard they had Micky and Mickey plus a stiletto shoe!

We hadn’t had a proper look at their rings before, so now had a chance to read the writing on them …

They dropped us back home, popped round to say goodbye to Pam and then drove back to Tavistock.

Ed’s Return to Harbour

When I looked out this morning I noticed that Ed’s boat was missing from its mooring which meant that he had gone to sea on a fishing trip. Nothing strange in that except that it’s now November and the weather can change dramatically at this time of year.

Hamish was fidgeting this afternoon and needed to go for a walk so I took him around the harbour. Once his task was complete I just thought I’d pop up the steps to the look-out and I spotted a very small boat making its way back to the harbour. Ed was returning home. The problem was a huge great wave that was building behind him and I had no idea if he knew it was there. I whipped out my phone to take some photos and I had a terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that this was going to have a bad ending. I seriously thought I was about to photograph a disaster but thankfully it had a happy ending. As Ed approached I heard him gun his outboard and he managed to keep ahead of the wave and keep the boat in a straight line. Any slight turn and he would have been flipped over.

I made my way back to his mooring and had a chat with him. Apparently he is a non-swimmer and his life jacket was in the cuddy!!!!!! I couldn’t believe that he was so stupid to be at sea alone with no life jacket on and he had no flares either. Amazing!!! A very lucky man.

Hamish Comes Home

Last night we had the annual firework display in Portreath and for once I was able to watch without worrying about Hamish as he is petrified by them. I watched from our back bedroom window and it was a fantastic show …

First thing on the agenda for this morning was a trip over to the kennels to fetch Hamish and Fred. Jo and Paul picked us up as the plan was to give the boys a run on the beach as rewards for hopefully (!) being good while away. Apparently they both behaved themselves – phew – and although pleased to see us they were also happy to say goodbye to Helen before leaving. We had a lovely walk on the beach …

and we saw a cormorant quite close to the beach which swallowed a fish …

Goodbye to The Barns

After breakfast and sorting out the bill for the weekend it was time to say goodbye to everyone and get on the road for home.

I didn’t mention it yesterday but there had been the most horrific crash on the M5 on Friday night. We had learned of it on Saturday morning while watching the News on television. We had to change our plans for the return journey as the motorway was still closed and so we set off for the M1, M25, M3 and A303. We stopped at Fleet Services on the M3 and as we went in we saw Pudsey collecting money for Children in Need …

We bought sandwiches and drinks for lunch and then parked in a lay-by on the A303 to eat them. It was a good trip home to Cornwall with plenty of chat about the weekend and what a fantastic time we’d had. Lesley dropped us in Portreath and then she popped round to see Pam and tell her all about it. Phill had set up a Skype connecttion so that she and Lesley’s husband Steve could watch the proceedings but unfortunately it had dropped out just as they got to the signing of the register. Pam said it really didn’t matter too much because they’d seen all the important bits.

What a fab weekend. Thanks boys for all the pressies we received and for giving us such a wonderful time. We both wish you a long and happy life together xxxxxx

Civil Partnership Day

After breakfast this morning we went for a wander around the hotel. We were in the downstairs room in the middle and Jo was above us …

This is round the back overlooking the river so once round the front we saw Phill looking out of his window along with Mark his right-hand man and then we went past the Riverside Room to look at the river …

Back to our rooms and the titivating began! We all met up in the Riverside …

and then I was told that Jamie had arrived …

He was in a Land Rover which had been dressed up with pink ribbons, balloons and stiletto heels! For part of the Bucks Weekend they’d gone to see Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – hence the shoes!

The Groom and his Best Man …

The arch had been decorated with flowers that had lights amongst them and on each side was a cage with a dove in it …

Everyone was gathering outside …

Jack and Cameron were ushers and Ellie was a ‘groomsmaid’ along with Abigail – Phill’s niece …

It was now time to enter the Barn which looked stunning …

The groomsmaids entered and then the boys walked in with Phill in floods of tears!

No photography was allowed during the ceremony but cameras were back on for the signing of the register …

Then it was time to leave the barn and mingle outside before the releasing of the doves …

Then the photographer began the job of getting group photos of the guests …

While everyone went back to the Riverside for coffee Jo and I followed the lads as they made their way to the river …

and Jo managed to get herself a job as photographer’s assistant!

The Barn had been set up for the meal and so it was now line-up time …

and then after checking the board to see where we were all sitting, it was time to go in …

After a fabulous meal Jamie was given a very unusual cake which sat amongst all the Disney characters!

and then there was the cutting of the cake …

After that there were the speeches …

followed by a presentation of flowers to various people who had helped to make their day – Jo had made all the invitations …

With the meal and presentations over the boys made their way over to the Riverside room where they began opening all their cards and presents …

It’s tiring work!

After a short break we were back in the Barn for the evening Disco. The boys had been practising a first dance and when the theme tune to Strictly Come Dancing started we all watched in awe as they cha cha’d to ‘Firework’ by Katy Perry – so apt as it was Bonfire Night!!

Then it was a free-for-all and we all had a boogie or two during the evening.

At midnight, after a last dance, we all staggered off to our rooms. It had been a most fabulous day – very emotional but oh so enjoyable.

Setting Off to The Barns Hotel

It’s hard to believe that this weekend has finally arrived. We seem to have been involved in the planning for so long now and it has been really exciting. The colours, the theme, lists and more lists! After taking Hamish and Fred to Gernick Kennels we set off in Paul and Jo’s car along with Lesley (Mike’s sister) at about nine o’clock. Lunch was a McDonalds at Cribbs Causeway and after a quick stop at Reading Services we arrived at The Barns, Bedford about four o’clock. We all checked in, found our rooms which had a little themed present in them …

had a cuppa and then arranged to meet at six o’clock for cocktails! Jo was determined to have a cocktail but we ended up with a much needed glass of red as we’re not really into cocktails.

After a delicious meal we turned in to get as much sleep as possible in preparation for a long day tomorrow.

Crane Day

It’s that time of the year again – craning out day. It’s very cold and a bit windy but the crane driver was happy to go ahead and lift the boats out. All the boats in the outer harbour came out and a few of the ones from the inner harbour. Several boats remained in the water in the hopes that we may get some nice autumnal weather and we had a visitor in the harbour - a cormorant.

Godolphin House

There’s one particular property that Jo really wanted to visit and I must admit I was pretty keen too. Godolphin House is only open to the public for three weeks a year and today was the last day for 2011. We arrived, parked and made our way to reception.

After collecting our entrance tickets we walked to the house and began the tour.

The first room we entered had a very interesting little hole in the wall …

We made our way into the dining room next to the lovely modern kitchen …

Up some stairs to a bedroom and bathroom. To the left of the basin are some steps which lead you down to the bath! A very clever use of space.

This led us into a sitting room where a volunteer was very keen to impart every bit of his knowledge!

We then passed through various bedrooms and bathrooms …

We now reached another sitting room with another volunteer to answer any questions. He explained all about the re-building of the house and how it had so nearly been lost as it was in a dire condition.

and into the final room – The Kings Room …

We all loved the house and said how warm and homely it was. It felt like a family home and not just a showpiece. We then left the house through the garden, past the poultry and walked to the orchard where we bought a most delicious carrot and coriander soup with granary bread for lunch …

After lunch we walked around the grounds …

We then took a few more photos of the buildings and farm equipment before heading back to the car.

On the way home we stopped at Morrisons to get some cake and cream as it’s Jo’s birthday today! Happy Birthday Jo! xx

Bodmin Jail and Fowey

Jo and Paul have been on holiday this week and worked really hard on their garden. However a little venture out and about was in order and Bodmin Jail was mentioned. We’d visited there for a meal while staying on the Bodmin campsite in May last year but Jo really wanted to do the tour of the jail so I drove us up to their place where we transferred to Paul’s car and made our way to Bodmin.

After looking at the Execution Shed …

we went inside the pub and paid for the tour. The entrance was through a door by the bar and there are several levels with the cells. Here are a selection of the photos that I took …

We had a great time and I didn’t think it was at all spooky!

When we came back into the pub we looked at the Menu as it was lunch-time but there were no snacky meals, it was all expensive evening-type food. So the plan was to drive somewhere nearby and have lunch. We kept driving and kept driving until we found ourselves in Fowey! There were slight detours on the way but nowhere had the type of food we wanted so we just kept going! After parking and walking down to the town we found the harbour and there was plenty of choice for us. After a quick look out to sea and at the activity on the water …

we decided to eat in the Galleon Inn which was right by the water and the prices looked good. It was so yummy we forgot to take any photos – just tucked in!!

After lunch we walked through the town and made our way back up towards the carpark. We’d spotted an interesting looking building and were hoping that we could get close to see it but were unlucky as it was privately owned. Here are a few last pictures from our day out …

Green Tomato Relish

It’s not very often that you find me cooking but this is something that I don’t mind making and thoroughly enjoy eating afterwards!!

Ingredients:

3lb green tomatoes
8 medium onions
2 cucumbers
1 red and 1 yellow pepper
2pts malt vinegar
1 dessertsp salt
2 tblsp flour (heaped)
1 tblsp cornflour (heaped)
1 1/2lbs white sugar
1/2lb brown sugar
2 dessertsp curry powder (heaped)
1 dessertsp dry mustard

Method:

Chop everything into small cubes.
Sprinkle with salt.
Leave for one hour and then drain.
Add vinegar and sugar and simmer for one hour.
Mix dry ingredients together with some of the liquid from the pot.
Add to the pot and simmer for half an hour.
Bottle.

Evening at the Arms

Paul’s mum and stepfather have been in Cornwall for the last week and for various reasons we’d been unable to spend the day with them when they went out and about. However this evening we’d been invited to join them all at the Portreath Arms for a meal as it was their last evening before driving home to Birmingham. We enjoyed good food and had a lovely time in their company.

King’s Troop at Gwithian

I received a phone call from Jamie today in relation to the ongoing dispute with the car parking company. He needed some more photos and so we hopped into the Mini and drove down to Gwithian. We didn’t chance getting a ticket so parked in the National Trust car park and walked down to get the photos. As we were leaving I noticed a group of riders heading for the beach and they looked like they were in the Services …

We’d seen on the local tv programme that the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery were staying in Cornwall as they showed them on the beach at Polzeath but I had no idea what group this could be. Mike went back to the car as it was really windy and sunny which was causing problems for his eyes and I followed the horses down to the beach. They galloped up and down on the waterline and I was hoping that they’d go into the sea but they didn’t while I was there. After taking photos I had a chat with a couple of Service Personnel who were not mounted and they told me that they were a different section of the King’s Troop from St John’s Wood and they were staying at a local farm. Apparently that evening they were having a jumping competition against the local Pony Club!

Meeting up with a Cousin

Last November I sent a message to someone on Ancestry. My mother’s parents were on their tree and I was hopeful of finding a new cousin. I’d completely forgotten about the message when in June this year I had a reply!

I was now in touch with a first cousin called Valerie and she told her brother Michael who also made contact with me. My mother was from a very large family and there are loads of cousins who I’ve never met – until today!

Michael and his wife Maxine were coming from Sussex to Devon for a holiday and so we arranged to meet at Kingsley Village at Fraddon. Now that I am the chief driver due to Mike’s eye problems this was going to be the furthest I’d driven but everything went well and we arrived on time. As we were looking for a parking spot we saw a couple waving frantically (I’d told them to look out for Henry) and then it was hugs all round. We went into the Village to get a coffee and doughnut and have a good old chat. Apparently Michael remembers meeting me when I was a child but I had no recollection of him or his sister at all. His father Alfred was the eldest child in the family while my mother Grace was the fifth child and eight years younger than him. After taking photos to commemorate the occasion we said our farewells and set off for home.

It was a brilliant day and hopefully there are more cousins out there for me to meet.

Cousin John’s Holiday

My cousin lives near Northampton and he arrived in Cornwall causing trouble before I’d even met him! We’d gone into Redruth at 6.30pm to meet the National Express coach which was due in at 6.50pm and at 8.30pm we were still standing at the bus stop in the drizzle with no sign of either bus or him! After talking to his sister I said I had to get home to get warm and dry and hope that John turned up on our doorstep some time. As we were putting the car in the garage a neighbour came out and asked if we’d lost someone – yes it was John! He’d been dropped at a different bus stop but he hadn’t come down to the one he arrived at last time, he just looked in the Station car park for a Mini and when he couldn’t find one he got in a taxi and came to Portreath. I was not happy!! I was cold, wet and very hungry – not a good start to the week!

We spent a quiet weekend in the village and then during the week we went for a drive to St Agnes Head which was very windy. John had had an accident which damaged one of his legs so he walked with a stick and wasn’t terribly mobile. Mike and I walked Hamish while John stayed in the car and admired the view …

We drove on into Perranporth but as they wanted £4 to park we turned around and came on home. If we’d been parking for the day then I wouldn’t object to paying £4 but as we just wanted to stop for about half and hour it seemed a pretty steep charge to me.

Later in the week we packed up a picnic lunch and I drove us over to Marazion. We parked in the car park that overlooked St Michael’s Mount and when a front row space became available I nipped into it! John and I along with Hamish went for a stroll after we’d eaten our lunch and we watched the kite surfers enjoying the waves …

John was a great help to me when I began researching our family tree as he is a mine of information regarding the family. I was able to show him photos and census records and he was very excited about it all. I think he enjoyed his time in Portreath and when he left us he moved on to stay with a friend in Winchester before making his way back home.

Farewell Time

With the weather forecast predicting rain by about ten o’clock this morning we were up at the campsite early to help with the dismantling of tents. Jamie and Phill had done quite a bit last night and when we arrived their tent was ready to come down …

However there didn’t seem to be the same amount of urgency in the other half of the camp! Jack was cooking bacon for breakfast!

Once we convinced them that they needed to hurry it didn’t take too long for their tent to come down as well.

Our attic was filled with their gear once again and we all went to the Arms for lunch. The rain had arrived and they all left Cornwall mid-afternoon. The house seemed very quiet once they’d gone but thankfully we got texts to report that they’d all got home safely.

Surfing Dudes!

Finally we got some good news from the Gwithian Surf Academy – there are enough waves for a surf lesson! Loaded up in two cars we arrived and parked up, checked in and the kids and Simon began the business of being kitted out with wetsuits and boards …

Once on the beach they had a warm-up and then began the instruction for catching the wave and just pushing up …

Then it was time to attach their boards and head for the waves …

Back to the beach to learn how to stand up …

and then back to the water to try it out with Mr Clever standing on his very first wave!

They all tried really hard and eventually made it!

At the end of their lesson they were all brought in and told they could stay in the water if they wanted to – of course they did! They posed for photos and then went back in …

It was soon time to head back …

and then we found that both cars had been served with parking tickets! The last time we’d parked here it was free and none of us had spotted any signs by the cars to indicate anything different. Phill was immediately on the phone to the private company and complaining about it. We took several photos to back up our case but it had left a sour taste in our mouths after such a fantastic afternoon. Jamie was already planning the email he would be writing to them and they’d be fighting it all the way!

Chinese Birthday!

The big plan this week was for our grandchildren to have a surfing lesson at Gwithian and they were booked in for Wednesday afternoon. They had only received birthday cards on their birthdays with a cryptic comment inside saying they would have to wait for a surprise in the summer. They had no idea that they would be having a surfing lesson! Unfortunately the weather decided to work against us and there was no surf on Wednesday or today. The boys had also planned a birthday party for them which should have been after the lesson but as we’d already postponed it yesterday, the decision was made to have the party tonight with (hopefully!) the lesson tomorrow. Jo was invited (Paul was working) and Lesley and Steve also came along. We had all ordered our own Chinese food and arrived at the campsite to find a long table set out ready for the feast. As dessert we had birthday cake which had been decked out with four candles each in the colour of the flash on their wetsuits! It was a great evening and we all prayed that there’d be enough surf tomorrow for the lesson to go ahead. They were running out of days!!

Falmouth and Carn Brea

It was Michael’s last day today and we decided to take him into Falmouth. The weather wasn’t brilliant when we left but as soon as we got over the hill at Lanner the sun began to shine and by the time we reached Falmouth it was a glorious day. We went to the Watersports Centre for our usual coffee and toasted teacakes and as it was so nice we sat out on the veranda. There was plenty happening for us to watch …

After the obligatory trip for a few of us into Trago for some bargains we met up again and walked round the walkway by the Museum. There was a huge yacht moored so I called over to her crew and asked her name. It was the luxury charter yacht the Northern Spirit …

Wow is all I can say!!

We returned to the cars and instead of our normal ice-cream on Pendennis Point we drove back towards home but made for Carn Brea as a diversion. The sky was blue and the view was great – plenty of photo opportunities …

Trebah and the Argal Reservoir

Today we picked up Pam and set off for Trebah Gardens where we had a table booked for an 11am cream tea! It was well worth booking because we got waitress service instead of having to queue with everybody else and she very happily took a photo of us all …

After we’d polished off a fantastic feast we had a wander around the shops/plants. They had some really unusual items for sale …

Pam’s scooter was being repaired and so we’d borrowed a wheelchair for her from Trebah. Jamie pushed her around and waited with her while Phill went to get the car and bring it as close as possible …

Back on the road again we decided to return home via the Argal Reservoir so that Michael’s two dogs could stretch their legs. I had a quick look at one end which showed just how low the water level was …

and then joined the others who had walked down to the water’s edge …

In the evening they all came down to Portreath again for a walk on the beach where Ozzie romped in the sea while Hamish made friends with a beagle and then went rock-climbing …

Tide Race and Surf’s Up

The sun shone for the Tide Race this year and everyone was frantically building their sandcastles before the tide came in to wash them away …

Then it was time for the family to get into the sea for the first time …

There was a shout from the boys that a couple of seals were swimming across the bay and I saw them but just missed them when I tried to take a photo. I promise they are there!!

While the gang were in the sea Jo and I stayed with Sara on the edge and played at jumping over the waves …

Michael had borrowed one of our wetsuits and although he protested that it was really too cold for him – he enjoyed himself!!!

The Kids Are Here!

At 6.30am my mobile rang and Jamie said hi mum we’re outside! They’d all driven down overnight and had a clear run thankfully. From being fast asleep I now had a house full with an extra four adults and four children – phew! After cuppas all round and several people falling asleep we got ourselves sorted just as the last member of the party arrived – Michael. This is a friend of Jamie and Phil’s from Luton and he, along with his two dogs, was staying at the campsite with them until Tuesday.

With the attic emptied of all their camping gear and the cars loaded up with it, we set off for Cambrose so they could check in and create their empire in the cul-de-sac.

Everyone helped and it was amazing how quickly the tents were erected …

The dogs stayed in the cars while the work was being done and then Cameron took Rosie and Poppy for a walk …

while Ozzie had a look about him that said “Can I come in yet please?”

The children went hunting for benches and then got help to carry them back …

We left them to it now and headed home to relax. They all had fish and chips from the site for supper and then came down to us so we could walk the dogs on the beach. It was a lovely evening …

Farewell to an Uncle

Today was the funeral of an uncle. Vic was four years younger than my mother and he reached the ripe old age of 97 back in April. I was very upset that we couldn’t get to his funeral and so I was determined to mark the occasion in my own way. Hamish and I set off up the mule-track heading for Lighthouse Hill and on the way I picked a variety of wild flowers. When we reached the road I crossed over and chose a spot on the cliff-top to sit and wait until one o’clock when I knew that the service was due to begin. My intention was to cast the posy over the cliff into the sea but as the wind was blowing onshore the flowers would have blown into my face so I just left them on the grass. RIP Uncle Vic – you were a lovely uncle who always made me laugh.

Trengwainton Gardens

Day two of the good weather (although not quite as sunny as yesterday), we were off to Trengwainton Gardens near Penzance and we took the dogs with us. After sitting in traffic on the A30 we decided to veer off and take a back route to Penzance and avoid the hold-ups. We parked in the overspill car park as the gardens were already very busy and then made our way down to the entrance. I had a look at the map provided …

but Jo had bought a book which meant we could follow the routes from it. Everywhere was very green! There were a few hydrangeas in flower …

but mostly it was ‘greenery’. I think we need to come back at rhododendron time next year. Don’t get me wrong, it was lovely greenery but I was looking forward to seeing some colour. However we did find some later on. We followed the track which took us to a little bridge by a pond and then we came out of the trees and saw the house …

Another little wooded bit with an interesting feature …

and then we reached the terrace with summerhouses at each end and agapanthus in abundance.

We took advantage of one of the benches to sit and have our picnic and the photo above was the view we had while we ate. This was intriguing me …

so when I’d eaten I went to investigate and found this …

The arrows told me where different places were from where I was standing – clever!

After lunch we set off again retracing our steps at first then diverting off on a new route which took us over to the main drive …

and here there was more colour as we reached the bank by the stream …

We then reached some open grassland where this tree had been planted by The Queen Mum back in 1962. Unfortunately a tree is a tree where Hamish is concerned and trees are only provided for one reason …

We now reached the walled gardens which were really pretty with loads of colour …

Just one more bit to see which was the magnolia area but once again it was just trees in leaf! Note to self – come back again but in the right season!

We wanted some coffee and cake to end the day and where better to go than Trevaskis Farm for very gooey chocolate cake! Yummy!

Morwellham Quay

With Jo and Paul on holiday we were all determined to visit Morwellham Quay on a day trip. Jo checked out the weather forecast and today and tomorrow looked liked having the best chance of sunshine. We left the dogs at home and set off early with the intention of getting home mid to late afternoon for them. When it’s hot they’re better off in a cool house than being dragged around in the heat of the day. It was only an hour and a half drive and we were soon parked in the car park. We paid our entrance fee and booked a trip on the mine train at the same time then walked down towards the quay where we saw the Tamar ketch Garlandstone and the steamer Monarch …

We passed the Assayer’s House, the Cooperage and Blacksmith …

and then arrived at the overshot waterwheel …

Passing the shop and the ShipInn …

we followed the route to the George and Charlotte copper mine and railway …

We were booked on the 11.30am trip and as we were a little early we sat and waited on the bench until we were told we could get on the train. It was a very basic cage pulled by the engine called George …

Our driver and guide was Jasen …

We travelled alongside the river until we reached the entrance to the mine …

After being instructed on Health and Safety regulations (!) we entered the mine. We were able to take photos without flash so they’re not brilliant but give a flavour of the trip …

We stopped several times along the way and Jasen explained about the workings of the mine and about the miners themselves – it was all really interesting. Then we came back out into the sunlight and went a bit further up the track …

before Jasen un-coupled George and took him the other end of our train for the return journey …

Halfway back we waited on the only bit of double track for the next train to come along and pass us …

then we continued back to the station …

It was now lunchtime so we made our way to the Ship Inn where we all enjoyed a meal of scampi, chips and peas – very yummy! After lunch we began to investigate the buildings and began with Ruth’s Cottage where we arrived just as a talk began. For those of you who watched Edwardian Farm this is the house where Ruth and the two chaps ‘lived’ – they didn’t of course!!!

From here we made our way past the Pottery …

to the Museum …

Had a quick look in the shop …

and then walked back towards the Quay looking in the Assayer’s House and Laboratory on the way …

At the top of the stairs there was a notice on the wall which indicated the height that the house had flooded to back in 1979. It was difficult to show how high this was so I stood Mike at the bottom of the stairs to try and convey how bad the flood must have been …

Upstairs …

At the back of the house were the chickens …

and just along from here was the Miner’s Cottage which was in stark contrast to the luxury of the Assayer’a House …

We now walked on down to the quay and went aboard the Garlandstone …

The last place to visit was the Edwardian Farm where we saw the animals that had been on the television programme …

We then left the farm via the sheds where the carts were …

and saw the horse and cart getting ready to do a ride around the site …

It was then time to return to the car and make our way home. What a fab day it was and it’s well worth a visit if you’re staying in the West Country.

Busy, Busy Weekend

Saturday - We’d known for a long time that Pam was getting a surprise visit from her grandchildren this weekend and thankfully she had remained oblivious of this until Saturday morning when we all turned up at her flat. Her face was a picture! It was the day when she had to take her pictures to the Millennium Hall ready for the Art Exhibition and so we all went with her. After delivering them she went home and waited to be collected by Jamie as we were taking her to Falmouth for coffee and teacakes at the Watersports Centre. Simon drove our mini and we gathered Jo in her mini on the way. Simon works for BMW and so I was very interested to hear what he thought of our Henry. He was very impressed and said we’d bought a good car – phew!! After coffee some of us nipped into Trago for a few bargains and then we said goodbye to Jo and we went on up to Pendennis Point where Pam bought ice-creams for everyone. Phill had his latest toy with him – his iPad – and so he was checking to see what ships were at anchor or passing by …

It was then Jamie’s turn to drive our car and once he got used to it he loved it! Once home we all changed into wetsuits and walked to the beach. This was our first venture into the sea this year and it seemed freezing!! There were no waves so we just swam to keep warm. We’d arranged to meet Pam, Jo and Paul at the Hall at six o’clock for the invitational evening at the exhibition and we all had a wander around looking at the pictures and then voting for our favourite one. At the end of the week the artist with the most votes for their picture will win a prize. There were some really good pictures and it was very hard to choose just one! The boys saw Pam home and Jamie parked her buggy …

The evening meal was a BBQ which Simon lit on the verandah while Jamie prepared all the food. It was very yummy and a great end to the day.

Sunday – After a very lazy start this morning we went over to the Arms for a roast lunch and Pam met us there. We’d arranged it for noon as the kids wanted to get in the sea again before they went home. We had a lovely meal …

and then moved back to our place for coffee. Mike’s sister Lesley and her husband Steve joined us here. They had been due to eat with us but had woken this morning feeling rough and decided to pop over to see the family but couldn’t face a big meal. When they all left it was a quick change into wetsuits again and another dip in the sea. No waves again so no surfing but Phill had bought a ball to play with and we had a great time.

Jo and Paul had been hoping to join us in the sea but were very busy laying slabs in their garden and unfortunately didn’t make it in time. However they did pop down to say farewell to the family and then went to the Arms for their evening meal. The kids bought fish and chips which they munched their way through while we had some chips. I was still full from the massive roast! Sadly it was now time to load the car and say goodbye but it’s only four weeks to their camping holiday when they’ll be back with the grandchildren. The house seemed very quiet after they’d gone but thankfully we heard they’d arrived safely when we got a text just before midnight.

War Graves

Each month I receive a newsletter from Lost Cousins and the latest one arrived in my inbox today. Reading through it I saw a link to the War Graves Photographic Project and I took a look at it. My great uncle John Northcote Marshall died in France in the September before the first world war ended and so I typed in his name. There he was:

I admit I shed a tear when I received it.

Farewell Faithful Friend and Hello Henry

We’ve owned our Mazda MX-5 for eight and a half years and it has given us so much. We’ve made many friends, enjoyed camping with it both in the UK and across France and Spain and experienced life in a car club. However with Mike having problems with his eyes the time has come for the 5 to go and a replacement found which I can drive. I’m only a little ‘short-arse’ and couldn’t reach the pedals at the same time as seeing over the steering wheel so I never managed to drive the 5. The problem was what to replace it with. Jo had also been looking at changing her car and she said that a Mini was ideal for me so we went looking. While she was searching she spotted a beautiful red Mini Cooper but she opted for another car. Henry (Cooper) was made for us! It was love at first sight and today he became ours. We picked him up after lunch before a trip to Eye Casualty for Mike to have some eyelashes removed and then on the way home I got behind the wheel and tried to remember how to drive! I was very pleased with myself as I was never the most confident of drivers but I had a drive around locally and then brought us home. Henry is now safely tucked up in our garage and I can’t wait for tomorrow when I get to drive him again.

Stratford Visit plus a Bit of Family History

Today was our last day out and about while in the West Midlands and we were going to Stratford-upon-Avon. We took a slight detour on the way there but eventually found the right road and parked up near the river. We walked along the riverbank passing the ferry …

and crossing the river …

we arrived at the Bancroft Basin …

had a wander around and made for the Baguette Barge …

After munching our way through sandwiches we set off for the town where I loved the old buildings …

We’d been unable to have cake with our lunch so a stop at Cox’s Yard was called for and coffee and cake enjoyed by all …

We’d spotted a boat trip on our arrival at the river and when we asked if dogs were allowed and got a positive response we climbed aboard. We all settled down …

and had a really lovely time …

We then walked back to the car and once there we all paid a visit to the facilities while Hamish kept watch to see where everyone had gone …

Once on the road again Jo and I gave Paul directions to Hampton on the Hill where she was hoping that we might find some relatives in a graveyard. Once there we found that the only church was Roman Catholic and so we moved on to Budbrooke where her family had also resided. We found the church and began the hunt amongst the graves. She found a couple of likely ones which on checking the laptop proved that one was a definite – yay – success! The church was locked but we got chatting with someone who turned out to be the keyholder and he very kindly unlocked it for us.

On the way back to the campsite we stopped for a quick look at Hatton Locks …

In the evening we saw a lovely rainbow …

and then Jo’s Godson Dylan arrived with his parents …

He’s gorgeous!!

Walk to Kingsbury Water Park

After two hectic days we decided to have a lazy time at the campsite and just take a walk into the Water Park. We set off along the road and entered by the main entrance. We soon arrived at one of the lakes and took a circular route around it.

We passed the sailing club on the way but being mid-week it was deserted …

Back where we’d started we made for the cafe for coffees and watched the wildlife feeding …

There were also other things to see – the farmer at rest and a bee box …

We had a look at the map as we were hoping to go back to the campsite via the woodland walk which would bring us out at the subway and into the area where we’d walked the dogs.

We passed the little railway …

and walked into the woods …

We then saw the sign for the campsite and Mike was thrilled to finally find the subway …

In the evening we all went to Fazeley for a meal with Paul’s mum and step-dad plus the newly-weds. We sat outside with the dogs and had a lovely time …

Ironbridge and Blists Hill

Ever since we knew that we were coming to this area we were looking forward to today. Mike has always wanted to visit Ironbridge and I loved the programme Victorian Farm which came to Blists Hill for some filming and so I wanted to see where it all happened. We chose the best day of the week for weather as it was glorious. We approached the bridge and it looked stunning …

I had seen a programme on tv when it was mentioned that the builder had made sure that his silhouette was included on the bridge and I think that this was it …

You can just about make out the features of a face! We walked underneath it …

and back up to the statue …

We then crossed the bridge looking down to the river far below …

At the other side there was the Toll House …

It was now time for coffee and there just happened to be a Scottie at the table next to ours so Hamish and Fred made friends …

We then went back to the car and it was a short drive to the Victorian town – Blists Hill.

We entered here and I took so many photos that it was very difficult to pick out a few for my blog.

We had a fabulous day and if anyone is in this area then do please visit because it is worth every penny.

Lichfield Cathedral

Yesterday was due to be a family day at the campsite but the heavens opened and so we took our food to Paul’s mum’s home and the six of us enjoyed a feast that was bought to feed twelve! So when we woke to sunshine this morning it was suggested that we go to Lichfield which was somewhere we’d never been before. We parked the car and walked to the Cathedral after spying it in the distance …

As we turned up a side road it was there in front of us in all its glory …

The dogs weren’t allowed inside so the chaps stayed outside while Jo and I went in. We bought a photography permit and Jo took the photos. Here are a selection of the fantastic shots that she took …

Today the Press were in evidence as it was the first time that the Lichfield Angel had been displayed in a glass cabinet …

When we left the Cathedral Mike went in for a quick look and then we went in search of somewhere for lunch. We found a lovely little place with tables outside and they even supplied water for the dogs …

Back at the campsite we gathered in the caravan awning for our evening meal. There had been plenty of food left over from the weekend and we’d bought some strawberries for dessert …

Jo doesn’t like fruit but she does like cake and squirty cream!!

After dinner we took the dogs for a walk to the Birmingham and Fazeley canal …

Dog-Sitting Day!

It is the day of the wedding and Jo is up early to get ready …

After a small panic when her hair refused to behave they were both dressed and ready for the off …

They looked so smart and were attracting comments from fellow campers about being slightly over-dressed for a campsite!

Fred seemed to be oblivious of the fact that his parents had left him …

The sun was shining so we got the awning out – a very rare occurrence!

In the afternoon we took both dogs for a walk to find the canal as we knew it was pretty close to the site. We walked along the towpath to lock 10 …

It was then a short walk to Bodymoor Heath bridge which we went under for a look but went no further …

We then went up onto the road which leads back to the site passing this lovely old Chapel which has been converted to a dwelling on the way …

I was getting regular updates on how the wedding was progressing and this is a photo of the newlyweds …

They were so lucky with the weather as it rained during the ceremony in Tamworth Castle but the sun shone for the photographs.

In the evening we took the dogs for their final walk and it looked fabulous as the sun set over the water and swans glided by for me …

Arrival at Kingsbury Water Park

We were up, sorted and ready to leave for ten o’clock this morning. After filling with fuel at the Worcester Tesco we use quite frequently it was time to join the M5 again and head for the West Midlands. The M5 led us to the M42 and after a brief coffee stop at the Services we continued to Junction 9 where we left it at Dunton Island. Jo had filled me with dread about this exit but we had no trouble at all and we were soon pulling into the campsite by Kingsbury Water Park. I messaged Jo to say we were here and she told me they were just going out for lunch with the family. As we crossed in the entrance we took Fred off them and he joined Hamish on the driver’s seat …

They were only gone for about a couple of hours and when they got back we all went for a walk with the dogs. After leaving the site we entered the outskirts of the Water Park and it was lovely …

Back at the site and Hamish was watching the wildlife and a lot of units were appearing ready for the weekend …

First Hop–Blackmore

We set off at ten o’clock this morning and were heading for the Blackmore campsite as an overnight stop on our way up to Birmingham. We’d no sooner joined the A30 and I got a message from Jo to say that they were leaving as well. We stopped at Cullompton Services and a few minutes later they pulled in too. We then had a yummy McDonalds burger and chips – very naughty I know but it’s ages since I last had one so why not??!! We said our goodbyes and they left to make their way to the Kingsbury campsite while we headed for Blackmore. We were given a nice pitch …

After Hamish had eaten I took him for a walk and we left the site to go along the footpath in the field adjoining it …

At the far end was a stile and this was the view …

We turned around, walked back and when we reached the road I noticed that a group of young heifers were watching us …

We crossed over and they were very interested in meeting Hamish …

They were gorgeous …

Back to the motorhome and Hamish had obviously had a very hard day as he immediately fell fast sleep!

Visitor from Ireland

I suddenly heard a thump and looked out of the window to find a pigeon sitting on our veranda. It was ringed and so I guessed it was a homing pigeon which was stopping off for a rest. Luckily we always have some corn ready to feed the local ducks and so I gave him some which he tucked into …

The next evening he was back again and I managed to read the ring which had IHU on it. Checking online I found that it meant he was an Irish bird. He appeared once more for some food and then he was gone. No sign of him today so he must be on his way home.

A Bevy of Bloggers!

It was quite a while ago now that Jo told me that one of our followers, Jordiegirl, had won a holiday in Cornwall and she was hoping to meet up. We were very excited at the prospect of actually meeting a fellow blogger and her family and today it happened! We all met at Treasure Park where after introductions were made we had a wander round and while Jordiegirl and her son went on the 3D ride we sorted out a place for lunch. The original plan had been to eat here at the carvery but unfortunately it has stopped for the summer and so after a few phone calls by Paul we were booked in at the Portreath Arms. With time to spare we had a coffee and a chat before making our way to the pub. Photo time at the table for the bloggers ...

After lunch (a very delicious roast and dessert for less than £10) we came home and collected Hamish then went for a walk around the harbour and down to the beach before making our way back to the cars at the Arms. Then it was big hugs and goodbyes from us all and I hope they have a lovely time visiting places in our beautiful county.

Boat Watch

One of the committee members of Portreath Harbour Association has been busy organising a launch of the Boat Watch scheme for Portreath. At midday today we had a police van arrive and they set up a stand with all the details we needed for joining plus outboard covers, markers and padlocks that we could buy. There was a steady flow of members and locals arriving and signing up to the scheme as boats are often targeted by thieves who want to earn a quick buck by selling stolen outboards and other fittings. It was all very interesting and we are now fully signed up members.

Building Progress

They've built a fence at the back now so I had to take them through the fencing at the front. One house is well on in construction and the one next to it is not so far behind ...

Seal in the Harbour

The tide was in and I just happened to look out of the window just as a little head popped out of the water! My first thought was that one of the local lads was swimming but then I realised it was a seal! He kept disappearing but then bobbed up and down again having a good look around before finally swimming out to sea.

Badminton Horse Trials Weekend

It is years since I last went to Badminton and when the subject came up earlier in the year it was decided that there would be a big family gathering there on Cross Country day. I was so excited that as soon as online booking opened I was on there booking our tickets and sorting out the campsite. The Devizes site we use is only about half an hour away and a perfect spot to stay so on Saturday we left home and drove up arriving at our normal time of 5pm. Bearing in mind this is Easter weekend we arrived to find only one hard standing pitch left which had been saved for us and it was right at the top end of the site. The campsite was heaving! It was a lovely spot though and really close to a dog-walk which I never knew existed! I took Hamish for a stroll and found myself in a pretty area of trees which were full of blossom …

Jamie and Phill were coming to collect us about 8am on the Sunday morning and so we walked down to the entrance to meet them and loaded up our bag of food and fleeces. We drove up towards the M4 but very soon saw signs to the Trials, followed them and were guided into the car park – all very easy! It was now breakfast time for the boys as they’d been up and on the road since about 6am! Being good campers that they are the table and gas burner were soon out, kettle on for coffees and then the bacon was sizzling in the pan …

The aroma was wonderful and people were passing with envy on their faces! After breks we began the walk over to where the action was and while the boys wandered through the shopping village Mike and I made for the Results notice board where we’d arranged to meet Debbie. It was very busy there …

but eventually we made contact and when the boys arrived we all went back to her car which was parked really close by. We stayed with her until Simon, Vikki and Sara appeared and also the boys’ friend Michael then we began the walk around the course. Here are a selection of photos from the morning walk …

We’d decided to go back to the car for lunch and so leaving Simon and co picnicking at a fence, we reached the buggies which were offering a service back to the field …

It was driven by a ‘mad’ woman!! She was obviously bored of just driving backwards and forwards so made the journey eventful by weaving through all the ruts on the grass and we spent the whole time hanging on for our lives and in fits of laughter! We gave our donations which was for Cancer Research and walked the last bit. Whilst we lunched we heard on the radio that there’d been a nasty fall at a fence and we saw the helicopter in action …

When we got back to the course Simon told us that it had happened at the fence where he’d been having his lunch! We now began the afternoon walk to see some more of the fences and here are the photos …

The lake is always the most popular place to be and so it takes a bit of time to make your way forward to the front of the crowd. While waiting Hamish made friends with something a little larger than himself …

The next thing we know is that there’s been a horrible fall and the screens were erected around the rider – not a good sign. Jamie was using our camcorder and he had it all on there! Then an ambulance came to take the girl away to the helicopter and once again it took to the skies …

By now we were at the front and could see all the action along with loads of professional photographers who were hoping for someone to go splash and fall in the water!

We were now making our way towards Badminton House …

and then on into the wooded section …

ending the day at the quarry where we watched the last few riders go through including Ollie Townend who had a fall and this gorgeous puppy who was sleeping through it all!

It was then time to say farewells to Michael, Simon, Vikki and Sara and the rest of us made our way back to the other side of the course. The boys had one last look at the shops on the way and we met them at the Mark Todd scoreboard which was at this time showing Mark in second place although this was corrected later to make him in first place with the show jumping to come the next day …

As we walked past the House there were grooms out with their charges who were enjoying a relaxing end to the day eating grass …

There was one very thirsty boy when we got back to the car …

and on the way home we went through the lovely named village of Tiddleywink!

Back at the site we all enjoyed a cuppa before saying our goodbyes and the boys set off for Luton.

Today we’d planned as a lazy time at the campsite generally recovering from all the walking done yesterday. Next door were packing up as were loads of other campers as for most people it was back to work tomorrow. Ebony, our neighbours’ elderly dog, was enjoying the sunshine and wearing her master’s hat to keep the sun off her eyes!

In the afternoon we watched the Show Jumping phase of the event and I was thrilled to bits when Mark Todd won it 31 years after his first win!

What a brilliant weekend – roll on next year!
